About the Position This temporary position offers hands-on experience supporting geological and geotechnical field investigations for transportation and infrastructure projects across Colorado. The employee will work alongside experienced geotechnical and geohazard professionals to assist with drilling operations, collect and handle subsurface samples, install and monitor geotechnical instrumentation, and support field data collection activities. This is a great opportunity for students or individuals interested in geosciences, engineering, or environmental fields to gain practical, real-world experience using specialized equipment, learning field investigation techniques, and contributing to projects that help keep Colorado’s transportation system safe and reliable. Major duties and responsibilities, include but are not limited to: • Assist in the completion of geological and geotechnical drilling explorations and field investigations. • Support drillers in the operation of Central Mine Equipment (CME) drilling rigs. • Collect core samples, standard penetration test (SPT) samples, Shelby tube samples, and continuous dry core samples. • Perform penetrometer tests in support of geotechnical and environmental investigations. • Assist with additional field investigation activities such as collecting bulk samples, measuring slope profiles, and supporting mapping efforts. • Assist in the installation of geotechnical instrumentation, including vertical and horizontal inclinometers. • Install static and pneumatic piezometers to monitor water levels and pore pressure. • Assist with monitoring lateral deflection and settlement in slide areas, embankments, and under roadways. • Assist senior geotechnical and geohazard staff with field data acquisition and basic data reduction. • Use and support monitoring equipment including piezometers, inclinometers, crack meters, tensiometers, and LiDAR. • Assist senior geotechnical and geohazard staff with filing, recordkeeping, and office support activities related to regional projects. • Drive to and from field sites as required (valid driver’s license required). • Follow established safety procedures and properly use tools and equipment. Work Environment: • Primarily 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM work hours, Monday through Friday in the HQ/Region 1 office building located at 2829 W. Howard Place, Denver. • The typical work week will be 40 hours a week in the summer months (May through August) with an option to continue part-time through December or January if the intern is local. An hour orientation is planned to start paperwork early in May with full-time employment and start date coordinating with any classes and finals that need to be completed. • Occasional travel may be required during work hours to assigned locations to collect data. • Potential overnight travel may be required. This would be for field operations and inspection trips. The length of stay could be 1 to 4 nights and home for the weekends. • Must be able to work outdoors along highway and interstate in differing environments (wet, dry, hot, cold). Safety equipment and clothing will be provided. • Must be able to lift 75 lbs. occasionally and 30 lbs. regularly. • Must be able to transverse moderate to difficult terrain unassisted (slopes, rocks, wooded areas, etc.) to perform field duties. • May be required to operate CDOT vehicles. • Must have current driver’s license. Minimum Qualifications Qualified candidates must be either: Any college student enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university seeking an Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Ph.D. degree in: • Geology (engineering, enviro, structural, mining, etc.) • Geotechnical Engineering • General Civil Engineering (with interest in geo) OR A recent college graduate. The ACSES is an integral, essential component through which the mission of the CSE Program is accomplished. In addition to system design, acceptance testing, and supporting implementation, members of the unit serve as the primary point-of-contact for State, county, and other child support services (CSS) agencies to direct, advise, clarify or educate users on automated financial record management functions and practices; and resolve operations and system support issues. Description of Job This position is currently hybrid - 2 days in office Office Hours 8 am - 5 pm negotiate specific hours when hired, core hours 9 am - 3 pm and must work eight hours a day. About this position: The position is a systems operations professional and performs the role of a subject matter expert on the operation of the ACSES case record management sub-system, and analyzes and evaluates the functionality of current automated case record management processes and guidelines.
